2020 Oct 23The state of biodiversity in Africa
Africa is immensely rich in biodiversity. Its living organisms represent nearly a quarter of the world's
biodiversity and it is home to the largest intact assemblies of large mammals on
Earth, which circulate freely in many countries. Africa's biomes range from mangroves
to deserts, from Mediterranean and tropical forests to temperate, subtropical, and mountainous grasslands and savannas, and even include
snow-capped mountains. There are numerous examples of
success and innovation in biodiversity conservation in Africa. However, Africa
is also experiencing
unprecedented rates of population growth, urbanization, and agricultural development, which poses significant challenges in reconciling human well-being with
economic and environmental prosperity.
