6th Biodiversity Report
As part of the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources (MERF) has validated the sixth national report on the CBD. The Chief of Staff Mr. Kodjo Kudadzé opened work on Wednesday, 19 December 2018 in Lomé in the presence of members of the technical committee supporting the preparation of this report, representatives of state institutions, NGOs, NGOs, associations and resource persons.
Biodiversity is the totality of life on Earth, it takes into account the various fauna and flora species. Togo ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on October 4, 1995. Following this ratification, efforts were made for its effective implementation at the national level, in order to therefore contribute to the achievement of the global objectives of the international community.
In order to have information on the efforts undertaken in general to achieve these objectives as well as their contributions to those of sustainable development. States Parties to the CBD are required to prepare and periodically submit their reports to the secretariat of the Convention. In this perspective, Togo has already prepared its first, third, fourth and fifth national CBD reports, respectively in 1996, 2000, 2009 and 2014. The sixth is the one that has just been validated.
“According to the objectives of the CBD, this sixth report has seven main parts, five of which are mandatory. This includes giving general information on the national objectives on the CBD, reviewing the measures that are being implemented, evaluating the progress made at the national level, Togo's contribution in terms of plant conservation.” said Dr. Adjonou Kossi, representative of the national consultant. He also added that the structure of this sixth report has nothing to do with previous reports.
According to Mr. Samarou Moussa, water and forest engineer at the Forest Resources Department, this report covers the period 2014-2019. It is a requirement at the international level to assess the state of biodiversity at the level of each country in order to comply with the global vision set out in the 2011-2020 CBD strategy, integrating the 20 Aichi Biodiversity Targets adopted at the 10th Conference of the Parties.
