Report on the State of the Marine Environment of Togo

As part of the implementation of the project to improve Togo's environmental information system (PASIET), which aims to contribute to the establishment of a mechanism for monitoring and measuring progress in monitoring the SDGs and in measuring environmental and ecological sustainability in Togo, support was requested from the Abidjan Convention in order to develop the REEM for Togo, just like Benin, Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, all parties to the Abidjan Convention. The objective of this report is to establish an overall assessment of the evolution of the environmental situation in the marine and coastal environment of Togo in the perspective of integrated ocean management (IOM).

Indeed, the REEM provides a sine qua non basis for the planning of development projects/programmes, a specific environmental assessment based on a periodic review of the health and status of a number of key elements that make up the marine environment, an essential element of the integrated ocean management (IOM) cycle.

Its development in Togo was based on the DPSIR method, in French FPEIR (Forces - Pressures - State - Impacts - Responses) combined with the participatory and inclusive approach. The process was completed on 28 and 29 June 2022 by a national workshop to validate the first report on the state of the marine environment (REEM) of Togo by stakeholders and actors in the Togolese marine environment at the CONCORDE hotel. During this workshop, the various chapters that make up the REEM were amended and validated by the audience.

Thus, the final document of the Report on the State of the Marine Environment in Togo based on the best scientific, technical and socio-economic information and its 15-page summary for decision-makers, including the main findings and recommendations, are available.

The Report on the State of the Marine Environment (REEM) in Togo is composed of seven chapters, they are:

  • Chapter 1: Biophysical, Economic, Social and Institutional Overview;

  • Chapter 2: Human pressures on the marine environment;

  • Chapter 3: Assessment of the state and evolution of the marine environment;

  • Chapter 4: Analysis of the responses provided by policy makers;

  • Chapter 5: Analysis of the impacts of environmental changes on the environment;

  • Chapter 6: Action options and scenarios;

  • Chapter 7: Strategic Conclusions and Recommendations
