Conservation of protected areas: support for residents of the Fazao-Malfakassa National Park to strengthen the protected area Fazao Malfakassa Park

Long confronted with several environmental problems including: desertification, loss of biodiversity, loss of biodiversity, reduction of areas, and elephant poaching, the 192,000 hectare Fazao Malfakassa Park is regaining its former greenery thanks to the multiple efforts made by the Ministry of the Environment and Forest Resources.

For example, this Tuesday in Sokodé, beekeeping groups from the localities of Fazao, Mèwèdè and Elavagnon-Todji in the Central Region received beekeeping equipment.

Estimated at nearly 58,836,200 CFA francs, the equipment is composed of frame hives, metal hive supports, smokers, frame lifters, bee brushes, jumpsuits, pairs of boots. It also includes 100-liter plastic barrels, 25-kg weighing scales, manual extractors, embossed waxes, colonization charms, honey jars, filters and ripeners.

This equipment, acquired by the Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources, with the financial support of the African Elephant Fund, aims to considerably reduce human pressures on the park.

“For a long time, we have been raising awareness among local populations about the conservation of all the animals in this park. And the best way to preserve them is to avoid the uncontrolled cutting of trees and poaching. To achieve this, these populations must practice other income-generating activities, in particular the production of honey,” said the Minister of the Environment, Mr. Katari Foli-Bazi.

He also urged the beneficiary groups to make good use of this equipment to make the most of it, because he said: “today honey is sold both nationally and outside the country.”
