Launch of the project “restoration of forest ecosystems in Siou”
Supporting the government's decennial drive to restore plant cover in order to fight against desertification and deforestation in Togo, this is the vision of the forestry and pastoral group 'Ragu' of Siou. This group initiated the Restoration of forest ecosystems project in the canton of Siou for a period of three years with the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The activities of this project were launched on Friday, June 2, 2023 in Siou in the town of Doufelgou1. The ceremony was presided over by the Deputy Mayor of the said municipality Waguena Manguissé Balakom, surrounded by the regional director of the environment, Lieutenant-Colonel Détès Komla, and the project coordinator Ms. Kokoa Babréma Colette, and the project coordinator Ms. Kokoa Babréma Colette. The village chiefs and CVDs from the canton of Siou were present. According to the coordinator of the project led by the RAGU group, which means forest in the local language, the initiative wants to contribute to the restoration of degraded land through an agro-ecological approach in the 7 villages of the canton of Siou, improve the living conditions of grassroots communities and fight against poverty. The action is part of the government's ambitions to reach the goal of a 25% forest cover rate by 2025 and the planting of one billion trees by 2030, Ms. Kokoa said.
