Togo: private planters will contribute to the extension of forest plant cover
The ambition of the Togolese government, that of reforesting 1 billion plants by 2030, is not a foregone conclusion. When we know that the land on which we can reforest does not all belong to the State but mostly to communities and individuals, said the Minister in charge of the Environment, Foli-Bazi Katari during a meeting in Lomé on Friday, July 30. To achieve this, it is necessary to involve private planters. He thus reassured private planters that incentives will be developed to encourage them in their reforestation initiatives in order to support the achievement of ambitions to extend plant cover.
According to a study carried out in 2016 with the assistance of FAO and taking into account the ecological, sociological and monetary values of forests in other sectors, we note that in Togo, the share of the forest in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in value is 321.20 billion CFA francs, or 18.32%.
Despite their ecological and economic benefits, forest degradation due to human needs is growing at an annual rate estimated at 0.91% in 2018 by the Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources.
